The one thing I don't like about traveling is that long airplane rides and long layovers can get boring!! To that end, as we were traveling to Nauvoo for the wedding, I was wandering through a bookstore in the Chicago airport during a 7 hour layover and the cover of this book caught my eye.
Yes, it looked like, and is in the Teen Genre, but it did pique my interest.
It's kind of a cross between the Story of Esther, Cinderella, the Hunger Games and the Bachelorette all rolled up into one. The surprising thing is, every time I think the author is going to fall into the 'cliche' of any given situation she surprises me! America Singer is a 5 in a caste system in the Country of Illea', what was once the USA before it was conquered by China and became the USC before they rebelled and won their freedom... sort of. The castes are 1 to 8 with #1 being the Royals and 8's being the beggars. It's amazing she was even 'Selected' to participate at all. Prince Maxon is the young man who must choose a "Princess" from the 35 girls who made it to the Selection, and some of the girls are more fierce than others. Throw into the mix America's forbidden boyfriend, Aspen and you have a pretty good story!
I am 2/3 of the way through the second book and still enjoying it. Don't be afraid to go to the ball with these girls! The 3rd book just came out in hardback, and yes, I bought it.
I have to tell you, I am still not sure how this is going to turn out, but it will sure be fun reading about it to figure it out. Kiera Cass has a writing style that is easy (as is meant for teens these days) and she has kept me intrigued. Thumbs up for the series so far, and happy reading!
